Buses are often unpredictable due to road construction, traffic, buses breaking down, and other unforeseen circumstances. Couple that with the prices being about twice that of a hard seater on a train and you’ll understand why if there is a choice, many people opt to take the train instead of a bus out of the city.
How do I choose?: For a listing of all the stations, the destinations they serve, bus schedules, and ticket prices go to: Long Distance Bus Station Schedules (Only available in Chinese)
Where are the stations? There are five major long distance bus stations in Chongqing.
- Cai Yuan Ba Chang Tu Che Zhan (菜园坝长途车站): This is the largest long distance bus station and most buses depart from here. Located right beside the old train station in Caiyuanba (so when the train station is demolished this probably will be too).
Bus Tip: 火车站(菜园坝)
Bus Tip (Alternate): Take a bus to 两路口 (Liang Lu Kou), then walk a short distance to find the entrance to the 大扶梯 (Da Fu Ti)—A giant escalator that takes you down the mountain to the train station area (1 RMB ticket). - Chen Jia Ping Qi Che Zhan (陈家坪汽车站): The Central station (actually not far from Caiyuanba). This is often the final destination for buses into or returning to Chongqing.
Bus Tip: 陈家坪汽车站 - Qi Che Bei Zhan (汽车北站): The North station. Has buses going to many of the northern parts of Chongqing (e.g. Fuling, Wanzhou, Changshou)
Bus Tip: 红旗河沟(汽车北站) - Nan Ping Chang Tu Zhan (南坪长途站): The South station.
Bus Tip: 南坪长途站 - Chao Tian Men Qi Che Zhan (朝天门汽车总站): Located near the Chaotianmen dock.
Bus Tip: 交通广场(长途站) or 朝天门
