Check all your options This site is useful for checking all available flights from any airport to another in the world (It only shows schedule, cannot book tickets here): Flight Schedules All Over The World
Booking tickets Book your tickets online and have them delivered to you from Elong the Chinese branch of Expedia. I have heard mixed reviews about this site, but it’s the only English plane ticket booking service available. Otherwise you can visit a nearby travel agent. Look for the words 飞机票 Fei Ji Piao or 旅行 Lü Xing.
Getting there and back
The airport is located way out in the Northeast reaches of the city (Yubei).
- Taxi: Going to the airport they will always start at around 100 RMB, but you can bargain it down to half that (keep in mind your distance from the airport). However, from the airport into the city is always 100 RMB, and they rarely settle for less.
- Airport Shuttle Bus: 机场大巴 (Ji Chang Da Ba) 15 RMB/Ticket. Shuttles depart approximately every 30 minutes from 6 am-8:20 pm. Then it generally takes between 40 min-1 hr to get to the airport, depending on traffic conditions. There are two locations in the city where the shuttle picks up and drops off passengers. One is in the north part of the city, near Guanyin Qiao (观音桥) in Jiangbei District. The second is closer to the center of the city, Shang Qing Si (上清寺) in Yuzhong District.
Getting to the Shuttle Bus Station If you can’t speak Chinese I highly recommend you ask someone to send you to the stop at least the first time you go because it can be difficult to find.
- Shang Qing Si (上清寺)
Bus Tip: 上清寺(民航大巴站) or 上请寺
From there…The Easy Way: A trick I have found useful is as soon as you get off the bus look around for a Bang Bang man (the porters that can be found all around Chongqing carrying big sticks). Just tell him you’re going to the Ji Chang Da Ba (机场大巴). For about 2 RMB he’ll help you carry your luggage and—more importantly—show you the way to the shuttle stop.
The “Look At Me I’m Independent” Way: Look for the circular skywalk and follow the directions outlined under the
Light Rail Tip.
Light Rail Tip: Get off at Niu Jiao Tou 牛角头 Station. Once you’ve exited the station walk away from the river, crossing the street, and continued going downhill along that main street. Eventually you will come to steps leading up to a circular skywalk. Go up onto the skywalk. Walk around the skywalk until you see Zhongshan San Lu (中山三路) below. If you see a cobbled stone restaurant on one side of the road called “Fantasy Coffee” you’re in the right place. Descend the skywalk so that you are on the sidewalk across the street from the restaurant. Walk along this sidewalk until you come to a small side street on the right called 美专校街. Take a right onto that street and walk about 20 meters to the shuttle bus stop. - Near Guanyin Qiao (观音桥)
Bus Tip
海关(大庙) – Going to the airport
渝通宾馆(加洲花园) – Returning from the airport
Did You Know?
Wait to Book: When flying domestically, most people in China (including travel agents) wait until just a week or two before departure to book their plane tickets. This is when you can generally find the best discounts. Keep in mind, however, that if you are traveling during a busy time (e.g. May Holiday—first week of May, October Holiday—first week of October, or Spring Festival—first four weeks of the lunar calendar) you will want to book as early as possible and discounts are unlikely even if you wait.
